The wounds of last season’s early Scottish Cup exit are still raw for Dundee’s Julen Etxabeguren. And the Basque defender wants to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself 12 months later. The centre-back was part of the Dark Blues side sent crashing out of the competition by St Mirren and which struggled in the league thereafter. Dundee have been drawn against another Championship team at the same stage this year, Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Etxabeguren is determined to start a cup run this time around – and to avoid what followed on from their fourth round exit last year. “It was very disappointing to come back and go out of the cup last time,” he recalled. “And we want to make sure that doesn’t happen again. “The first game after the break sets the tone and we want to do well in the cup this season. “We have to come back from the break and keep working like we have been in the last few weeks. “We’ve shown we can compete with any team in the league. We can go from match to match and think we can beat anyone.”
