Neil McCann calls on Dundee fans to replicate Firhill backing

Dundee manager Neil McCann has called for their home fans to replicate the backing that inspired them to victory against Partick Thistle.

McCann felt the 729 away supporters played a crucial role in Simon Murray’s last-gasp winner, which came four minutes after he netted his first goal since moving on loan from Hibernian.

Dundee now host Motherwell on Saturday looking to avenge their Scottish Cup defeat to the same opponents earlier this month, a 2-0 loss which saw McCann argue with a fan in the main stand at Dens Park.

The former Scotland international, whose side have lost three home games in a row, said: “I’ve had run-ins with some fans about supporting the side. A minority will voice their discontent during the match.

“While there’s time on the clock, I want the fans to support the side, and I have to say the away support at Firhill was incredible. There was a huge number down and the support was there from start to finish.

“And they were rewarded for that support with the performance. Because, when we equalised, you could see the energy from the fans and what it meant to Simon to score his first goal for the club he supports. I think we all shared in that, and it drove us on.

“It certainly put Partick Thistle on the back foot, you could see it had a positive effect on us.

“I would love to have that on Saturday against Motherwell because I do believe we have a side here well capable of beating Motherwell.

“We must arrest that home form because it’s not been good, and in stark contrast the away form has been excellent.”
