Dundee still have a fight on their hands to secure Premiership safety.
The Dark Blues have now dropped to third bottom in the Premiership after this 2-1 defeat to Motherwell and had Partick Thistle beaten St Johnstone rather than drawn, their predicament would be even more concerning.
There is a four-point gap between the two sides but this was an opportunity lost.
The visitors took the lead thanks to a Genseric Kusunga finish on 24 minutes but they were only ahead for four minutes, with Ryan Bowman equalising.
There were good chances for Craig Wighton and Simon Murray but it remained 1-1 at half-time.
A flat start to the second half may have had something to do with Kusunga being stretchered off as the teams prepared to get the game underway again.
The centre-back had taken a blow when scoring and was perhaps suffering delayed effects of that.
The Dundee defence was at fault for conceding Motherwell’s second on 52 minutes – a Cedric Kipre back post header.
McCann’s men bombarded the Motherwell box in the last quarter of the game and Mark O’Hara shot over from six yards with three minutes left but 2-1 it remained.
