Dundee brought the curtain down on their season with a disappointing narrow defeat against Partick at Dens.
The Dark Blues had made sure of their Premiership safety with Tuesday night’s win over Ross County in Dingwall and had little but pride to play for while the Jags could have been automatically relegated depending on their result and what happened with Ross County at St Johnstone.
To be fair to the home side, they certainly did not look like they were already on their holidays but were just edged in the contest by a team fighting for their lives thanks to a solitary Kris Doolan goal.
Dundee boss Neil McCann made four changes for the game from Tuesday’s starting line-up with young keeper Calum Ferrie awarded his first start and Elliott Parish rested.
With Darren O’Dea suspended and Steven Caulker injured, Genseric Kusunga and Daniel Jefferies were drafted in at the heart of the defence while Randy Wolters made way for Roarie Deacon.
Ferrie was called into action early on in just the fourth minute making an outstanding save high to his left from an Adam Barton header.
However, considering the dire straits Partick were in, they were remarkably lacklustre for most of the first half and it was the home side who came close next in the 27th minute when skipper Paul McGowan found time and space in the Jags box to hit a shot which Tomas Cerny parried to safety.
Shortly after, the home captain had to be replaced by Randy Wolters with the half ending with two chances for Thistle but Steven Lawless and Miles Storey failed to capitalise.
Ferrie made another vital save just two minutes after the restart when Danny Devine powered a header towards goal from a corner by half-time sub, former Dundee United player Blair Spittal.
The Dark Blues had a chance on the hour mark when full-back Cammy Kerr embarked on a driving run before sending a shot from the edge of the Partick box just too high to trouble Cerny.
However, the Jags got the lifeline they desperately needed in the 63rd minute when sub Doolan was calmness personified inside the home penalty box firing past Ferrie.
Dundee tried to haul themselves back into the game with Simon Murray having a chance in the 80th minute but his goalbound shot was blocked.
There was a further opportunity for Wolters but Cerny was alert to push his fierce low drive away to safety at his near post with the Partick fans celebrating at the final whistle with their side now destined for a play-off with Livingston.
