Mum was the word for Glen Kamara after the proud Dundee star scored his first senior goal for Finland.
The 22-year-old bagged the second goal of the game as Markku Kanerva’s side defeated Greece 2-0 on Monday night, continuing their 100 per cent record in Uefa Nations League C2 after four matches.
Kamara admitted he was stunned to find himself on hand to complete the triumph, arriving late in the box to clinically convert a Robin Lod cross from eight yards.
The moment was all the more poignant for the ex-Arsenal kid as it came in Tampere, the town of his birth before he moved to London at the age of 12. And he revealed that his first call would be to his mother,
“I still don’t really understand the goal,” he joked. “I’m never usually in the position to score so it was an amazing moment.
“I was born in Tampere, so that makes it extra special. This is definitely something I will need to tell my mother! I’m not sure if she was watching the game.
“I have to give so much credit to my teammates, they deserve all the recognition. They showed hunger and desire to keep going until the very end. Greece are a good team and it was a tough game but I didn’t feel the same hunger from them.”
He later Tweeted: “2 games, 2 wins, first goal for my country and top of our group! Couldn’t of asked for a better international break.”
Finland boss Kanerva heaped praise on the Dens Park man, who has been linked with several clubs, including Sunderland
“It was a really mature performance from Glen,” Kanerva said. “He made lots of interceptions and showed a calmness in possession. I am pleased he was rewarded with a goal.
“I’m incredibly proud of the team. Once again they showed mental strength, fighting spirit and controlled the game.”
Meanwhile, former Dundee defender Jack Hendry has backed his old team to move up the Premiership table.
The Celtic centre-back, who played for Scotland on Sunday, said: “I haven’t seen many of Dundee’s games to be fair but sometimes they’ve been struggling to get results in games they maybe deserved to get points in.
“That part of it will be a frustration but I’d like to see them do well.
“They’ve got the ability in their squad to get out of the position they’re in and hopefully they can do that.”
