Dundee were minutes away from marking the start of a new era by climbing out of the bottom two places only to be denied all three points in stoppage time.
One of the five January signings to make their debut, Scott Wright, had given them a 66th minute lead with a classy goal.
For large parts of the game the Dark Blues looked like a group of players getting to know each other.
But the commitment that McIntyre has demanded was there in abundance and Wright’s moment of quality had appeared to settle the match.
Seny Dieng, who had produced a brilliant save from a deflected Aaron McGowan shot at 1-0, made a mess of a clearance just after the clock had reached 90 minutes and Darian Mackinnon punished the mistake.
It was a cruel late blow but the point edges Dundee further ahead of St Mirren and there was plenty in the performance to suggest better days are round the corner.
