Dundee midfielder John O’Sullivan admits they have become too used to disappointment and that has to change.
The Dark Blues let themselves and their large travelling support down by losing 2-1 to relegation rivals St Mirren on Saturday.
That dispiriting defeat sent Jim McIntyre’s side back down to the bottom of the Premiership with only seven matches remaining.
The first of those fixtures comes tonight at McDiarmid Park when they face St Johnstone.
O’Sullivan knows that the mindset must be more positive and that it won’t be acceptable for the heads to go down.
The Irishman said: “We are all disappointed and, on Monday, in here it wasn’t a pleasant place to be.
“We don’t have time to dwell in the past, though, because we have to get ourselves out of this situation.
“We want to put it right as soon as possible and we owe the fans.
“They came in their numbers and cheered us on at St Mirren.
“We let down the support and, of course, ourselves.
“It just deflated everyone so that’s something we have to look at: when things go wrong, how you react.
“I haven’t been here that long but you kind of get used to being disappointed.
“That is something we’re all going to have to change in a short space of time.
“We need to break that from now on and try to get a win and change the thinking for everyone around the club.
“The mentality is the biggest thing for me and the gaffer has been really good at getting us to keep going and carry on fighting.”
