The life of a football player is usually one to be envied by the fans who turn up to watch them.
Even at the modest level the Scottish game operates at, the money is good and there aren’t too many old bangers parked outside Premiership grounds.
However, who would want to be a Dundee United player over the next few weeks?
Relegation is a real probability rather than mere possibility and, horror of all horrors, they might even be sent down to the Championship by their city rivals Dundee.
Life isn’t any rosier for the supporters, many of whom will no doubt think twice about attending the remaining matches – season ticket or not.
That’s just how it is following the heart-breaking Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Hibs.
There can be no sugar-coating of what is a dire situation.
The least the United fans deserve is for the players to battle hard in the remaining five league matches, starting with Hamilton Accies at home on Sunday.
What they want to avoid, above all else, is being relegated at Dens Park on May 2.
Even if their team manages that it wouldn’t be much of a consolation for this awful season but it is still miles better than the alternative scenario.
