The first precedent has been set for cancelling a major European football league.
And if the decision by the Belgian Pro League to declare Club Bruges their champions is replicated in Scotland, Celtic will be confirmed Premiership winners without another ball being kicked.
There was one match of the regular season remaining when the league was suspended, with play-offs due to decide the top positions.
The league’s board of directors announced the decision to call the league and not go down the null and void route. They have made a recommendation to their general assembly.
It will be made official on April 15.
There is no template yet for the likes of Dundee United and Raith Rovers in our lower leagues, though. In Belgium it hasn’t been decided what to do with the relegation and promotion issues and a working group has been established for that purpose.
Club Bruges are 15 points clear of second-placed Gent at the top of the table.
In a statement, the league said: “The board of directors unanimously decided that it was not desirable, whatever the scenario envisaged, to continue the competition after 30 June.”
