Dundee United boss Robbie Neilson awaits outcome of SPFL vote that could see his club crowned Championship champions

Dundee United boss Robbie Neilson could become a promotion-winning manager today.

However, the matter is beyond his control, with the SPFL vote of all 42 clubs set to decide the Tangerines’ fate.

The teams have to cast their ballots by the 5pm deadline and if the league’s resolution is passed then time will be called on the Championship, League One and League Two.

That will see United declared champions of the second tier and they will be playing Premiership football whenever the 2020-21 season begins.

Neilson is determined to remain calm and relaxed about it all, telling BT Sport: “Our objective at the start of the season was to get promoted.

“Obviously, we would have liked to have done that by the usual circumstances.

“But it’s in the hands of the SPFL and the member clubs to decide.

“We’ve been top of the league since day one and have a 14-point lead,” added Neilson.

“It’s been a difficult four years for the fans travelling across the country in the Championship and we’ve managed to get ourselves in this position so we would hope to go up but, ultimately, it’s out of our hands.

“Everyone would like to get back to football as soon as they can and finish the season but I don’t see much point stressing about it because there’s nothing they can do.

“We might as well try and enjoy this period as much as we can with our families.”

The Tannadice gaffer accepts that some clubs will be unhappy if an early finish is the outcome later today but he urged everyone to look at the “greater picture.”

“I totally understand it,” he insisted.

“Not everyone is going to be 100% happy.

“But you have to look at the greater picture, first and foremost the health of everyone and then, off the back of that, looking after Scottish football as a whole.

“It’s not just about one or two clubs.”
