Dundee United fans have declared who they want to be the next manager of the club.

The Courier has been running a poll on who should take charge at Tannadice following Robbie Neilson’s departure on Sunday night.

We included six top contenders – Tommy Wright, Craig Levein, Stephen Robinson, Lee McCulloch, Jon Daly and John Robertson – as well as an ‘other’ option.

By 3pm on Wednesday there had been 1,319 votes, with most going to St Johnstone legend Tommy Wright, who netted 491 (37,23%).

Tommy Wright.

The Northern Irishman has an impressive track record of one Scottish Cup, four European qualifications and five top-six Premiership finishes on a modest budget.

He is out of work after his seven-year stint in Perth ended in the summer, so sporting director Tony Asghar would not have to worry about compensation were he to make an approach.

However, if the Tangerines do want Wright then they may have to make a change to how things are run behind the scenes.

There is also likely to be competition from Northern Ireland, who are thought to be keen on interviewing the 56-year-old for the manager’s role.

The next most popular candidate is former manager Craig Levein, with 233 votes (19.33%).

Craig Levein.

Levein was in charge of United between October 2006 and December 2009 and enjoyed a great relationship with then owner Eddie Thompson before leaving to become Scotland’s national coach.

The 55-year-old has revealed he would be interested in a return to Tannadice if offered a second stint as boss.

As far as Arab fans are concerned it is a two-horse race, with none of the other four candidates gaining more than 10% of the vote.

Stephen Robinson, who led Motherwell to a third-place Premiership finish in 2019/20, picked up 108 votes (8.19%), ahead of United assistant Lee McCulloch on 98 votes (7.43%).

Lee McCulloch.

Former Tangerines skipper Jon Daly was next on 95 votes (7.2%), followed by Inverness Caley Thistle manager John Robertson on 87 votes (6.59%).

Of the 185 other votes (14.03%), Arbroath boss Dick Campbell led the way with seven.
