Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has confirmed that “the door is open” to potential buyers.
Thompson is in the United States exploring possible avenues of investment for the troubled Tangerines, who stand on the brink of relegation to the Championship.
The Tannadice chief told Courier Sport that he is now willing to do a deal that would see him sell up and step aside as chairman.
However, it is understood he will only do so if he feels the change of ownership would enable United to negotiate the considerable financial hurdles that await them.
Anyone stepping up to the plate would, realistically, need not only money to purchase Thompson’s 53% shareholding but also be capable of meeting costs going forward.
Indeed, the ability to fund United on an ongoing basis is paramount.
Thompson said: “I can confirm that the door is now open to anyone who thinks they can take the club forward.
“I am over here chatting to people and we will wait to see what happens.
“The opportunity is there if someone wants to put money into Dundee United but it must be what is right for the club.”
Thompson is expected to return from America in time to attend the match against Dundee at Dens Park on Monday night.
Should Kilmarnock win against Hamilton at New Douglas Park on Saturday that would mean the Dark Blues could relegate the Tangerines in the derby.
