Manager Ray McKinnon is hoping Cammy Bell will be the experienced goalkeeper he needs to start rebuilding Dundee United.
The 29-year-old Rangers goalie has been targeted by McKinnon and talks have taken place between him and the player.
The capture of Bell, a Scotland international, would send out a strong signal that the Tangerines mean business as they try to get out of the Championship.
It would also be a personal coup for McKinnon, who has been fighting hard for several weeks to try to persuade the keeper to swap Ibrox for Tannadice.
Bell still has a year left on his Rangers contract but if he can agree a severance deal then he may well decide to accept the challenge of being number one at United.
He lost his place to Wes Foderingham last season and the Light Blues are already lining up a move for Trabzonspor keeper Esteban Alverado.
