The possibility of Dundee United banking a seven figure windfall from the sell-on of former defender Andy Robertson has risen with the news that Liverpool are reported to have a serious interest in the Scotland international.
United chairman Stephen Thompson inserted the clause as part of Robertson’s sale to Hull City for the best part of £3 million two years ago.
Liverpool have lodged a £7 million bid for Leicester City youngster Ben Chilwell, which has been knocked back.
And the English Premier League champions are thought to be ready to play hard-ball and may even let Chilwell’s contract run down until next summer rather than sell just now.
Sources on Merseyside suggest Robertson has been identified as Jurgen Klopp’s plan B for a new left-back.
If Chilwell is valued at around £10 million by the Foxes, it is unlikely Hull would entertain a much lower bid as their man has substantially more club and international experience than Chilwell, who has been capped as an England under-21 but has only played three times for Leicester and some loan games at Huddersfield.
And Courier Sport understands that if Robertson was sold to the Reds for the Chilwell valuation – or indeed any other of the big name English clubs linked with him – it would net United around £1 million.
It goes without saying that for a club which has had to cut its cloth since being relegated from the Premiership, this would be a huge boost as they seek to build a promotion-winning squad.
