Matt Lockwood was shocked to see Lewis Toshney drop down the divisions – but believes his former Dundee team-mate is tailor-made to lead Dundee United back to the top-flight.
Lockwood is big fan of the 24-year-old, who had spells with Cowdenbeath and Raith Rovers after leaving Premiership side Ross County in 2015.
The Dundonian is expected to play a key role with Ray McKinnon’s new-look Championship outfit as they bid to make an instant return to the top flight.
Lockwood said: “Lewis is too good for the kind of clubs he’s been at recently.
“He deserves to be somewhere like Dundee United which should bring out the best in him.
“I was surprised to see him playing for Cowdenbeath and Raith Rovers, to be honest, but the good thing is it’s got him back to where he should be.
“At Dundee, you could see he was a real good footballer who’d developed a lot of the right habits at Celtic as a youngster.
“He’s the kind of player who will raise his game surrounded by better players and knowing him he’ll be desperate to kick on and get back to the top-flight.
“It shows United mean business. They will be a target next season in the Championship but bringing in someone of Lewis’s calibre can only help.”
