In response to the December 22 piece about local cup tournaments such as the Forfarshire Cup, Chris Dear replied.
“I read the piece about local cup-ties and recently came across a programme for an Aberdeen v Dundee United match in 1952.
“They were competing in a tournament called the Dewar Shield.
“It was played off between the winners of the Aberdeenshire, Forfarshire, Perthshire and Stirlingshire cups.”
Chris, from Linlithgow, continued: “This semi-final first leg was won 3-0 by Aberdeen, but remarkably, United played very well and won the return 4-1 at Tannadice.
“This meant that a play-off match was necessary.
“Aberdeen won it, again at Tannadice, with a 7-3 scoreline!
“The trophy was last played for in 1982 and St Johnstone now keep it.”
Adam Olejnik’s input was: “I also remember United playing in the Dewar Shield.
“Falkirk were one of the opponents I can remember.”
