Jimmy Borland is a regular contributor to this column and, indeed, also to the Tele letters page.
No mean goalkeeper in his day, he is well known as a long-time goalie in the juniors, notably for North End and Lochee Harp.
As a schoolboy at Stobswell Secondary School, he was chosen to represent the Dundee Schoolboys U/15 Select in 1957.
Said Jimmy: “This team beat Aberdeen 3-1 at the old St Joseph’s park in Gilburn Road, Kirkton, Dundee.
“I was the reserve goalkeeper and actually left school after that game.
“We had a good side and at least four players had trials for senior clubs.”
Jimmy has sent in a photo of the select squad, which is featured below (right).
Back row (from left) – Martin (Logie), D Sharp (Rockwell), I Sharp (Stobswell), Coull (Harris), Neish (Logie), Borland (Stobswell), Higgins (St John’s), Cullen (Morgan).
Front row – Cochrane (Rockwell), Kelsey (Lawside), Stirling (Harris), Gearie (St John’s), Hay (Rockwell), Breslin (Lawside), Wallace (Rockwell).
As well as stints at Montrose and Raith Rovers, Gordon Wallace would go on to play and coach at Dundee United.
He also played for, coached and managed Dundee, in addition to spells at other clubs.
