Dundee United go into today’s re-arranged Championship clash with Alloa knowing they can eat into the gap at the top of the table.
The weekend saw leaders Ayr United slip up when they were held at home by Morton.
It means three points for the Tangerines today will mean a deficit that stood at eight when gaffer Robbie Neilson took over last month would be down to just three.
And it would leave them able to wipe out the Honest Men’s advantage when the pair meet at Tannadice next week, though they could still trail Ross County, who currently lie second.
Robbie has stressed he and his players will be looking no further forward than today’s outing but already the meeting with Ayr on Friday week is shaping up to be one of the most important games of the season so far.
United remain hopeful of having skipper Fraser Fyvie, centre-half Frederic Frans and full-back Callum Booth available for today.
They were all stepping up their work in training over the weekend after injury problems.
If they’ve suffered no reactions, they’ll be in the squad.
And in the case of Frans and Booth, both of whom have missed games, the manager has admitted that would give him a nice selection headache.
“They have been doing well in the team but so have the players who’ve taken over from them while they were injured,” said Robbie.
The reserves are not in action this week and don’t have another competitive fixture until they’re due to face Celtic in a league game early next month. A friendly has been arranged with Barry Ferguson’s Kelty Hearts next week.
