The chairman of the supporters’ group that was among the strongest critics of former Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has urged Arabs to get behind the club now he’s gone.
Pat McCarron of Fans United welcomed the news Thompson has now sold his 53% shareholding in the Tangerines to current chairman Mike Martin, director Jim Fyffe and two other local businessmen.
He’s viewing it as a fresh start for the club and is even urging fans who were refusing to renew their season tickets why Thompson still owned shares, to get out and buy them.
“I’ll be buying mine before the game against Arbroath and it would be good to see others doing the same,” he said. “We all wanted Stephen Thompson gone and since the news broke yesterday, my phone has been going non-stop from fellow Arabs who are delighted.
“For me it’s now time to move on from the past and for everyone to get right behind the club. That’s all we’ve ever wanted to do.
“I’ve liked a lot of things that have been happening over the summer at Tannadice but the problem was Thompson was still the majority shareholder.
“He’s gone now and we can move on and, hopefully, upwards.”
Meanwhile, Dundee United Supporters Foundation released a statement which said: The Dundee United Supporters Foundation also welcomes the news of the sale and will look to meet with the new owners as soon as possible to find common ground that will allow the Foundation to play a positive role in the future of our football club.
“The Foundation will also be engaging all the Fans groups to discuss a blueprint to bring the fans groups together to bring unity.”
