Csaba Laszlo is looking for mental strength from his Dundee United players as they try to put pressure on runaway leaders St Mirren in the closing months of the season.
The Buddies sit 14 points ahead at the top of the Championship and can extend that advantage to 17 this weekend when the Tangerines are idle.
It will leave United with three games in hand on them and Csaba is determined they’ll be used to close the gap to the top.
In terms of quality, he insists that’s something of which his team is capable.
But he knows, at the business end of the campaign, it will also take grit and determination.
“We have 14 games to go and the most important thing is the team understands in these 14 games we have to give everything,” said the gaffer.
“Not just to go out and play football — this is not enough. You have to work also on your own individual quality.
“I tell you (the players) why because your own individual quality can help the team quality.”
And he’s used the example of club captain Willo Flood to show exactly what he requires.
“I see Willo Flood, our captain. He is not the youngest player but against Aberdeen he had the most one-against-one situations in which he made tackles and tried to win the ball.
“He tried to bring the team forward with his passes. OK not everything was 100%, but he tried and kept trying.
“This is what I want from the other players, from the younger players, that they do the same.”
The run-in also looks likely to see more game time for young attacker Matty Smith.
The 20-year-old’s progress was hampered early in the season by injury but he is coming on strong now.
And last weekend was the first time Csaba has used the 20-year-old from the start of a game.
In terms of both attitude and quality of work, the gaffer was impressed by him.
“A positive was Matty Smith. He has not had a long time in the first team and tactically he has to learn a lot, but he developed and he showed a lot of energy. He was active,” he added.
Admission to next week’s game at Livingston will be pay at the gate.
