Stephen Thompson could be standing down as Dundee United chairman to take up the reins of a new sister club in America.
Thompson was making no comment today but his decision to quit Tannadice at the end of the season has fuelled speculation of the Tangerines developing a strong US link.
It is known that for months now his search for new cash at Tannadice has involved discussions with a group of potential investors on the other side of the Atlantic.
And it’s believed one proposal that’s been looked at is a tie up with a new club in the recently formed National Independent Soccer Association, which is bidding to become the third tier of the league set-up in the US.
That would see Thompson based largely in America and at the helm of a team that would have strong links to Tannadice.
It would also see current United vice-chairman Mike Martin take over Thompson’s Tannadice role.
Martin has increased his stake in United in recent times and there have been suggestions he purchased the shareholding of former director Justine Mitchell, Stephen Thompson’s sister, though none of the parties involved have confirmed that.
If the plan was to come to fruition, it’s unlikely to please the section of the support who want the chairman gone completely.
