Csaba Laszlo has already made five signings in January but is planning more before the winter window closes.
The Dundee United boss has brought in Emil Lyng, Brandon Mason, Thomas Mikkelsen as well as young French pair Idris Kadded and Logan Martin.
But before next week’s deadline he’d like at least one more new face. That’s seen him draw up a list of specific targets and continue to scour the market for what might be available.
“We have a budget and at the moment I am balancing how I can use my budget, so I can bring more players.
“I have three very good players in mind. One is too expensive for us. For his quality I think he is not too expensive but for us we have to think also that we can’t step over our budget.
“It’s the Championship and players are saying I want to achieve something and there is also the wages. You have to convince people also that they will move forward if they come here to us. But I do hope I can make more signings.”
Injured midfielder Scott Fraser, meanwhile, could be back by late March from his broken foot.
Initially, he was ruled out for the rest of the campaign but, as the Tele revealed last week, he’s been making a rapid recovery and that’s continuing.
Regarding the short-term injuries, Tam Scobbie should be fit for the trip to Inverness next week. He strained a calf muscle in training last Friday.
And while he was off yesterday after becoming a father, William Edjenguele is on course to be in Saturday’s squad for the clash with Morton.
The Frenchman has also been out with a broken foot.
