Dundee United have been linked with a sensational move to get St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright as their next manager.
It’s emerged overnight the 54-year-old is on the Tangerines’ radar as they seek a man to guide them back to the Premiership.
And if they were to get him to would be a massive coup for chairman Stephen Thompson.
Wright led Saints to the 2014 Scottish Cup, when they beat United in the final, and has regularly secured top six finishes for his team.
That work has seen him linked to the job at Aberdeen should current boss Derek McInnes take up the vacant post at Rangers.
Wright is also regarded as the natural successor to close friend Michael O’Neill at Northern Ireland.
Should they fail to reach the World Cup finals via this month’s play offs there is a strong chance O’Neill will move on, possibly even to succeed Gordon Strachan as Scotland boss.
If that did happened it’s odds on the Northern Irish FA would offer the job to Wright, who still has a home near Belfast.
This is not the first time United have been linked with the Saints boss. After the sacking of Jackie McNamara in 2015 they attempted to secure his services but were knocked back by the Perth men.
It’s understood as of today there had been no approach to St Johnstone requesting permission to speak to Wright and ex-Hearts boss Casaba Laszlo remains favourite.
