It’s understood the 53-year-old has met with United chairman Stephen Thompson to discuss the post.

Romanian-born Laszlo was in charge at Tynecastle for two years from 2008 and in the process picked up the manager of the year award in in 2009.
He was eventually sacked by Hearts’ controversial former owner Vladimir Romanov in 2010 but has always indicated he would like to manage in Scotland again.
His odds have plummeted to 2/1, with only John Hughes (1/2) more favoured by bookmaker Bet Victor.
Laszlo recently applied for the vacant manager’s position at Tynecastle, seven years after he was axed by the Edinburgh club. The role went to Craig Levein instead.
Last season Laszlo, who lives in the Scottish capital, led Dunajská Streda out of the Slovak Super Liga relegation zone. after taking charge in October, he led them to a 16-game unbeaten run.
Seven days ago the Tele reported that Hughes, who was linked with the United hot-seat two years ago before Mixu Paatelainen’s appointment, was leading a two-horse race with Jim Mcintyre.
Former Falkirk boss Hughes was installed at evens, while ex-United striker Jim McIntyre was rated 5/4.
Now, Hughes is available at just 1/2 with Bet Victor, while McIntyre’s odds have lengthened to 3/1.
Alan Stubbs and Darren Young are also available at 8/1, while Alan Archibald and David Hopkin are at 16/1.
A host of names, including caretaker boss Laurie Ellis, are touted at 25/1.
Hughes is out of work after his three-month stint at Raith Rovers came to an end in the summer. The club were relegated to League One after losing in the playoffs to Brechin City.
McIntyre is also jobless after being sacked by Ross County last month.
In a three-year spell he led the Staggies to their first major trophy, the League Cup, thanks to a 2-1 win over Hibernian in March 2016.
