Dundee United set for double deadline day swoop

It’s set to be a busy transfer deadline day at Dundee United.

When the window slams shut this evening, manager Ray McKinnon may have made a double addition to his squad.

On the radar are two young talents from south of the border, Joe Piggott and Mark Waddington.

Striker Piggott has already played as a trialist for the Tangerines U/20s and has also impressed in training over the past couple of weeks.

The 19-year-old was formerly with Rochdale and is likely to be signed up on a two-year contract before the day is out.

He would represent the final piece in the jigsaw with Ray’s plans for his attack. Over the summer he’s added central attackers Scott McDonald, James Keatings and Patrick N’Koyi to the squad.

All along, though, the gaffer has expressed a desire to add an up-and-coming talent to that experienced trio.

And Piggott is regarded as very much one for the future, though there is every chance he will be seen at first-team level this season.

If clearance comes through quickly, he could even be on duty for Saturday’s Irn-Bru second-round clash with Alloa Athletic at Tannadice.

Today the Piggott deal was understood to be very close to completion and, while there was more work to be done to complete a deal for Stoke youngster Waddington, there is every chance he will be fixed up before the midnight deadline.

The 20-year-old midfielder is a team-mate of former United star kid Harry Souttar.

They saw action together as recently as Tuesday night when, along with Dundonian Charlie Adam, they turned out as Stoke’s U/21s went down at Blackburn in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Waddington started at Blackpool but, after a dispute with their controversial owner Karl Oyston, switched to the Potteries in 2015.

He was loaned out to Kilmarnock for a spell last season but, after just a month or so north of the border, he was called back south.

At the moment it looks likely if business is done for him it will be on a loan basis.

As with Piggott, if a deal is completed, he could be on duty at Tannadice this weekend.

Their signing would bring the number of new arrivals at United in this window to a staggering 15 players.
