Dane Thomas Mikkelsen could be back at Tannadice next season — if parent club Odense get real with their valuation of him.
The 27-year-old scored eight goals in 25 appearances after joining the Tangerines on loan in January.
His improving form over that period has seen his name added to manager Ray McKinnon’s list of possible targets for next term.
But United will only consider doing business to bring him back if the price is right.
And that could be a major stumbling block for Mikkelsen’s hopes of a return.
He still has a year of his deal with Odense to run but there had been some suggestion back in Denmark they would be willing to release him this summer.
That speculation seems to have stemmed from the fact much of his time with the Danish Superliga outfit has been spent out on loan.
As well as United, he’s been farmed out to Swedes Gothenburg, but despite that it’s understood Odense have slapped a £50,000 price on his head. United will not do business at that sort of price but if Mikkelsen can persuade Odense to be more realistic he could be headed back to Tannadice next month.
Time, though, is not on his side and manager Ray McKinnon is pressing ahead with plans to complete his new-look strikeforce for next season.
James Keatings has already been fixed up from Hibs and Ray wants to add another two front men for the 2017/18 campaign.
“I’m really pleased to get Keatings because he is a talented forward who will be capable of playing in the Premiership and the Championship,” he said.
“We’ve also added Billy King, who will get forward down the flanks, but I do want another couple of central strikers as well.
“It’s important we have competition and different types.”
