Dunfermline 0 Dundee United 1: United through to Irn Bru semis

Dundee United booked an Irn Bru Cup semi-final place with a hard-fought victory over Dunfermline at East End End Park.

They showed eight changes from the side that won when the teams met in the Championship on Tuesday.

Bu there was little sign of that interrupting their fluency as the Tangerines edged ahead via a close-range Mark Durnan shot with just eight minutes on the clock.

It was Durnan’s third goal in the last four games.

The Pars missed a great chance to level when an Andy Geggan cross reached the unmarked Nicky Clark, but he fired his shot well over the bar.

Right on half-time the home side went close again as an angle drive from Michael Moffat struck the outside of the post.

Nine minutes into the second half it was United’s turn to go close when Nick van der Velden played Blair Spittal in on the left of the home penalty area.

His low shot was well-placed, but he was denied by a fine save from Sean Murdoch.

Just before the hour mark the home side were reduced to ten men when Lewis Martin had a tug at Spittal’s jersey as the United man ran clear, leaving referee Willie Collum with no option other than to produce a red card.

United looked in control after that and only a fine stop from Murdoch denied Durnan a second goal of the afternoon.

In injury time Ali Coote ran clear, but he was also thwarted by a  Murdoch save  and United had to settle for a single goal victory.
