Dundee United snap up experienced Dutch and French defenders

Dundee United snap up experienced Dutch and French defenders

Dundee United have secured the services of experienced defenders William Edjenguele and Frank van der Struijk.

Frenchman Edjenguele, 29, and Dutchman van der Struijk, 31, have both put pen to paper on one year deals.

Edjenguele appears to tick all the boxes in manager Ray McKinnon’s search for a quality centre-half.

He has plenty experience and has played top division football in Greece and Switzerland as well as in the second tier in his native France.

The stopper also has knowledge of the British game having had spells at Coventry City and Bury.

In all he played more than 50 games south of the border before heading to Greece for the second time in his career for spells in their Superleague with Panetolikos and Veria.

He’s been on United’s radar for a while and impressed in training when he came over for a trial last week.

On signing, he said: “I enjoy football in the UK and was keen to move back. I was very impressed with everything about the club when I visited recently.

“It is a beautiful day for me and now I just want to start working and help the team achieve some success. I have some flair in my game but I am here to defend first and foremost. ”

Both he and van der Struijk could be partnered in central defence in this Saturday’s Irn Bru Cup clash with Peterhead at Tannadice.

The former Willem II and Vitesse Arnhem can operate at right-back as well as at the heart of the defence.

He said: “I am looking forward to playing for Dundee United. After Nick van der Velden spoke to me about the club and I checked out the training complex and the Dundee area, I was happy to sign for United.

“It is a little different over here in the style but I believe I will do well here. ”

Ray McKinnon said the deals were weeks in the making but was pleased to have the deals done. He added: “We had to be patient with both these signings. We worked on these deals for a good few weeks and I am delighted to get them on board.

“They will add experience and quality to our squad in an area I have been looking to strengthen. Both will play a part in Saturday’s game versus Peterhead.”
