Dundee United will give Lewis Toshney until just a few hours before kick-off to show he can face Ayr United at Tannadice tomorrow.
Toshney himself is told the Tele he expects to be fit.
But he will have a precautionary scan on the knee injury he suffered at Dumbarton last Saturday.
And having only resumed light training, manager Ray McKinnon will check on him just before he finalises his team.
“We believe the scan will be clear but he hasn’t trained most of the week.
“He’s feeling a lot better than he did on Sunday and Monday when he could hardly walk but we won’t take any chances.
“We’ll check on him in the morning and if he’s good he’ll play, if not we’ll leave him out.”
Meanwhile, United have been criticised for devaluing the Irn Bru Cup — if they play a weakened side when they face Peterhead at Tannadice next month.
Thursday’s draw paired them with the outfit from the Blue Toon.
And their manager, former Tangerine Jim McInally, hopes they take the competition seriously.
“I was delighted when I saw the draw,” he said.
“Then I heard Dundee United were considering playing an U/20 side against us. They must have forgotten they were relegated last season.
“There needs to be a reality check of where they are. They are a Champion-ship club and they should be looking at this competition as a chance to win a trophy this season.
“They play in the highest-ranked league in the cup and they should be trying to win it.”
So far, no one from United has indicated they do plan to use their U/20s.
