Premiership opposition may be perfect timing for Dundee United

Ray McKinnon concedes facing Premiership opposition in the League Cup could be a case of perfect timing.

But he’ll only know for sure at the end of the clash with Inverness Caley.

After two encouraging performances so far, the Tangerines look ready to face the No 1 seeds in their group.

As Ray himself pointed out, that’s the theory — the 90 minutes in the Highlands will provide the answer.

“That’s probably a question you should ask after the game,” he said.

“What I know from watching Inverness last week is they are a big strong side and they will be a test, so we’ll see how we do.

“For me it’s about continuing to build and making progress, as well as qualifying for the next stage because we want to do well in the cup.

“So in that way it is probably good we are facing a Premiership team.”

He confirmed that, as impressive as the perfor-mance in the 6-1 hammering of Cowdenbeath was on Tuesday night, changes are likely.

With Scott Fraser picking up a knock, one could be enforced.

“He might miss out but it’s nothing serious.

“I’d like him fit because he’s done very well so far and when he gets on the ball he can cause teams problems.”

Dutchman Nick van der Velden could get his first start, though he is not quite ready for 90 minutes.

“It could be a case where it’s better to start him and give him a 60-minute blast.

“He showed on Tuesday when he came on he’s a very good player and that way we get the benefit and it boosts his fitness.

“I should say he’s not that far behind the rest in his fitness anyway.”
