Willo Flood: ‘I wouldn’t have left top flight for anyone else’

Prodigal son Willo Flood has revealed Dundee United are the only club he’d have quit Premiership football to join.

But as he starts his fourth spell as a Tangerine, the Irishman has made it clear he doesn’t plan to be out of the top flight for long.

The 31-year-old signed up on a one-year deal from Aberdeen late last week and will make his latest debut against Cowdenbeath in the League Cup at Tannadice tomorrow night.

He is, though, already setting his sights on the league campaign and making sure United’s stay in the second tier of Scottish football is as short as possible.

“United are the only team I’d have left the Premiership for, I wouldn’t have done it for anyone else,” he said.

“Every time I’ve been at the club there have been happy memories and that’s what I’m aiming for this season.

“I’ve always enjoyed my football when I’ve been here and I’ve always done well and the team has done well.

“We have to make sure we are up there challenging this season.”

Flood took a massive wage cut to move from Aberdeen and despite Dons boss Derek McInnes assuring him he was still part of the plans at Pittodrie.

For him the lure of playing every week and helping United escape their current predicament was too strong.

“I spoke to the manager at Aberdeen and he was absolutely brilliant,” Flood said.

“I started over 20 games there last season and some people might sit back and think that’s enough.

“To be honest, that doesn’t do it for me and I just want to play every game.

“The manager here is very determined and wants to do well and I want to be part of that.”

His Dons team-mate Cammy Smith has also made the switch to Tannadice, in his case on a season-long loan.

The 24-year saw the chance of a regular starting place as too good an offer to turn down.

“I’m at the stage where I have to be playing and I want to take that chance at United,” he said.

“I’m here for the season and my focus is Dundee United.

“When I first heard United were interested it made me really excited.

“Dundee United are a top-six club in the Premiership and ever since I’ve watched football that’s been the case.”
