Dutch striker agrees to Dundee United move

He’s been gone more than 20 years but fans’ favourite Freddy van der Hoorn still has Dundee United at heart.

The star of the early 90s has played a big part in the Tangerines’ latest signing.

Dutchman Nick van der Velden has agreed to join up at Tannadice to add strength and experience to Ray McKinnon’s squad.

The 34-year-old was also wanted by Premiership Kilmarnock but has opted for United instead.

And the Tele understands that’s partly down to the influence of Van der Hoorn.

The former team-mate of the current boss strongly recommended to Van der Velden that he head for Tannadice.

That advice has proved the clincher and the attacker is joining up on a one-year deal.

“We’re delighted to be getting Nick on board, he’s a very good player,” said manager Ray McKinnon.

“He’s got that bit of real quality we’ve been looking for. Contacts in Holland recommended him and he played well in a bounce game.”

Van der Velden could be cleared in time for tomorrow’s League Cup clash with Cowdenbeath.

Ironically, his arrival could pave the way for Henri Anier to make the opposite journey across the North Sea.

The striker was Friday night’s goal hero in the League Cup at Arbroath but is still available to leave for free. The Estonian inter-national is attracting interest from several Dutch clubs.
