Lewis Toshney fit for Dundee United start against Arbroath

Summer signing Lewis Toshney is fit to be considered for a starting place when Dundee United kick off the season in the League Cup at Arbroath tonight.

The £40,000 purchase from Raith Rovers had been playing catch-up in training after missing the start of pre-season before signing up at Tannadice.

And his progress was stalled after breaking his nose in a closed-door win over Cove Rangers just under a fortnight ago.

But appearances against Brechin and Blackpool over the past week have convinced gaffer Ray McKinnon he’s ready for 90 minutes.

“He’s been working hard and he did well when he came on in the last two games, so I’ve no worries about his fitness,” said Ray.

“Tosher will be in my thoughts.”

And despite a shorter than normal pre-season because of the early start to the new League Cup sections, the gaffer is satisfied his squad are ready for the beginning of the competitive action.

He’s been impressed by the attitude in training and believes his players are looking sharp going into the game at Gayfield.

“The boys have worked hard and they’ve shown me in the games so far their fitness is where it should be.

“Even in the game against Blackpool the other day when we lost, there was a lot to be encouraged about.

“Boys like Blair Spittal look to have a wee edge about their play and I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s going to do for us.”

There was also praise for midfielder Charlie Telfer, whose United career appeared over when he was loaned out to Livingston by previous boss Mixu Paatelainen back in January.

Ray’s given the 21-year-old the chance to show that may not be the case and, so far, has been delighted with his response.

“He’s really applied himself in training and he’s another one who’s shown in games he has something to offer.”

On Sunday, Arabs will have the chance to get close to the players as the United Business Club hold a Meet The Players and Behind the Scenes Tour.

Supporters can go along to Tannadice between 12.30 and 3.30 when they can meet the players and management team as well as enjoy the opportunity of a brief tour of the stadium.
