He was England international Daniel Sturridge’s strike partner as a kid, now Dundee United new boy Tope Obadeyi is eyeing teaming up in attack with Simon Murray.
And he finds that second prospect just as exciting.
The 26-year-old trained with his new team-mates for the first time today after signing a one-year deal on Friday.
But having spent the last two years at Kilmarnock, he already knows a lot about most of them.
They impressed him when he scored for the home side and Murray grabbed a double for United in a 4-2 win in the final league game of last season at Rugby Park.
So he’ll have no problem if he’s asked to form a partnership with the 24-year-old.
“We lost but it was a good game for the neutral and United played well,” said Obadeyi.
“I was impressed by players like Simon Murray. He’s caught my eye when I’ve watched United so if the manager wants us together up front that wouldn’t be a worry.”
Even if that’s the case, no one would argue Liverpool star Sturridge will remain his most lethal strike partner.
“I played with Daniel at school, in Coventry City schoolboys before he went to Manchester City and he came on loan to Bolton when I was there.
“I’ve known him since I was young, about 11.
“We still keep in touch and I speak to him every now and then. I’ve haven’t bothered him since last week though!”
More important for Obadeyi is what lies ahead and, while in joining United he may have stepped down a league, he believes in terms of his career it’s a move up.
“For me this is a massive club. If they were both in the Premier League I would say that Dundee United is a bigger club than Kilmarnock.
“Anyone I’ve spoken to has said Dundee United are massive whatever league they are in.
“I think this is a great move for me.
“I’m delighted to be here and I’m looking forward to helping United challenge next season.”
United head to Forfar tomorrow night with a mix of youth and experience in their squad.
Missing out will be new signing Lewis Toshney. He broke his nose in Saturday’s closed-door win over Cove Rangers.
