Dundee United boss Ray McKinnon is delighted to have added to the “spine” of his team by securing Rangers goalkeeper Cammy Bell.
Last week saw him fix up central midfielder Stewart Murdoch from Ross County and, having added the vastly-experienced Bell, he is working hard to bring in a central defender and a central striker.
As the Tele revealed, he’s been speaking to Birmingham City about attacker Denny Johnstone.
He’s also cast his eyes south of the border when it comes to his defence. That should see Scotland youth international Zak Jules arrive on trial from Reading in just under a fortnight.
And Ray has stressed he sees getting things right down the middle of what will be a new-look team is going to be vital to United’s chances of escaping the Championship at the first time of asking.
“The spine of your team is huge and the goalkeeper is the first part of that,” he said.
“In Cammy, we are getting a very good keeper who is vastly experienced.
“He’s played for Scotland and knows the game here well.
“He’s also very hungry. He’s come here to play and that’s why we’ve worked so hard to get him.”
United start pre-season work tomorrow and, from Monday, a string of trialists will start arriving.
It will, though, be the following week before 19-year-old Jules arrives.
If he impresses, a season-long loan from the English outfit is likely.
