Talks with Middle East businessman as Dundee United’s hunt for investors goes on

Dundee United’s search for investment, even new owners, is continuing but so far there have been no concrete offers to take control.

It’s understood the latest figure to show an interest is a Middle East-based businessman who is a Tangerines fan.

So far he’s managed to keep his identity under wraps but talks with chairman/owner Stephen Thompson may even be held this week.

That there has been interest from that part of the world comes as no surprise.

When Thompson was head of a consortium linked with Australian outfit Newcastle Jets it was believed part of the funding would have come from the Middle East.

That deal’s now been aborted but other, who were involved are still in contact with the chairman.

Meanwhile, the group he flew to America to meet with earlier this month are still monitoring developments, so investment from that side of the Atlantic cannot be ruled out.

In both cases, however, there remains plenty talking to be done before any major cash injection is sealed.

The word from Tannadice today was that a number of parties have expressed interest in taking over but in several cases it has been immediately apparent the offers could not be taken seriously.

Right now, United are pressing ahead with plans for next season, with manager Ray McKinnon continuing to work his way through a list of potential signing targets.

And McKinnon has been backed to successfully rebuild the playing side at Tannadice by his former SFA coaching colleague Donald Park.

The vastly-experienced Park, head of coaching education for the ruling body, worked closely with McKinnon when he was on the staff there and rates him highly.

“When I first saw him out on the training pitch I could see he had had a terrific upbringing in the game,” he said.

“I firmly believes he is building his career on solid foundations.

“He’s learned all the skills and all the hassles at a smaller club, moved on to a bigger one then ended up somewhere like Dundee United which is fantastic.

“I think he’s definitely the right choice for United.

“He’s a thoughtful and astute guy who sees what is happening in a game and can make appropriate changes to make and impact.”
