Dundee United could face surprise competition for the services of manager-elect Raymond McKinnon.
Hibs, who he’s battling with in the play-offs right now, could make a move if they fail to hang on to Alan Stubbs this summer.
It’s understood the new regime at Stubbs’ first club Bolton Wanderers see him as key to the rebuilding plan they’re putting in place over the summer.
The Hibees are hopeful he’ll stay with them but with his name also linked to the vacancy at Celtic they have been looking at possible replacements.
And McKinnon’s name is high on their list of candidates.
His stock will only increase if he continues the remarkable season he’s had at Raith by knocking the Leith side out of the play-offs tomorrow.
That means United may have to move fast to get their man.
And even if Raith are involved in a play-off semi-final against Falkirk next week, they could be forced into making an official approach for his services.
One thing in their favour is Hibs’ involvement in the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers.
It means it will be the end of the month before Stubbs is in a position to listen to what Bolton, or even Celtic, have to say.
Even so, the ideal scenario for United would be for Raith to be knocked out in tomorrow’s second leg at Easter Road.
That would allow them to make their move for McKinnon.
While, McKinnon is the strong favourite to land the Tannadice job, another former Tangerine, Warren Feeney has been linked with the post.
The Irishman, who enjoyed a loan spell with United in 2008, is currently boss of English League Two side Newport County.
