Dundee United’s hopes of cutting the gap at the bottom of the Premiership were dashed by a superb Kris Doolan strike that handed Partick Thistle victory at Firhill.
Despite dominating much of the proceedings the Tangerines were behind when Doolan struck from the edge of the area after a sweeping 71st minute move.
It was hard luck on Mixu Paatelainen’s team who themselves went close on several occasions.
They should have taken the lead after eight minutes when the ball was worked to Ryan Dow inside the Thistle box but his low shot was well saved by Tomas Cerny.
Dow was again denied again when the ‘keeper beat away his powerful 14 yard shot after another dangerous attack.
And Cerny was the home hero when he made a superb one-handed stop to deny John Rankin.
United continued to press in the second half but then came Doolan’s strike and there was no way back.
It means with six games to go they trail second bottom Kilmarnock by five points.
