Dundee United boss Ray McKinnon believes cup scores showed strength of Championship

Dundee United boss Ray McKinnon believes the Betfred Cup results have shown the strength of the Championship.

As well as his own side’s heroics in comprehensively beating Premiership visitors Partick Thistle on Tuesday night, there were last-16 wins for Morton at Hamilton and Queen of the South at Hibs, who are favourites for the second-tier title.

The reward for the Tannadice team was a clash with the men from Greenock in the quarter-final at Cappielow on Tuesday, September 20 (7.45 KO).

As he prepares to take his Tangerines west to face Dumbarton in the league tomorrow, McKinnon believes the cup scores add weight to his argument that United’s new division will be extremely challenging this season.

“I just think it is important everyone realises how tough this league is,” said McKinnon.

“In midweek you had Morton beating Accies, us beating Partick and even Queen of the South going to Hibs and winning like they did.

“That shows strength in depth in the Championship.

“That is why I have been banging on about it.

“Teams are well organised and fit, with good players.

“There are a lot of good pros in it and you have to be switched on to do well.

“I know I keep repeating myself but it’s true.”

Meanwhile, McKinnon is still striving to add one or two faces to his squad, with central defence the target area.

He said: “We have a couple of defenders we are keen on but they have potential options elsewhere so we’ll just have to wait and see if they become available.”
