Dundee United will be devaluing the IRN-BRU Cup if they field a weakened team against Peterhead, according to Blue Toon manager Jim McInally.
The League One side will travel to Tannadice to play the Championship side for the third round tie on the weekend of September 3 and 4 following yesterday’s draw and it is understood United boss Ray McKinnon is considering fielding his under-20 side in the competition.
McInally would be less than impressed with his former club’s approach to the tournament if this turns out to be the case.
He said: “I was delighted when I saw the draw then I heard Dundee United were considering playing an under-20 side against us. They must have forgotten they were relegated last season.
“There needs to be a reality check there of where they are. They are a Championship club and they should be looking at this competition as a chance to win a trophy this season.
“They play in the highest ranked league in the cup and they should be trying to win it. I’ll be surprised if it happens and I know for sure there is no chance of it happening when I played there.
“One of the challenges that comes with being relegated is playing in this competition and they should just get on with it.”
Regardless of which Tangerines side his team faces McInally insists his squad will relish the chance to play at Tannadice.
He added: “We’ve beaten Dundee already in one cup competition this season and it would be nice to go to Tannadice and make it a Dundee double by beating United.”
