Dundee United’s Dutch connection has paid off again, with defender Frank van der Struijk agreeing a one-year-deal.
Van der Struijk (31), who can play central defence or right-back, comes on the recommendation of his compatriot Nick van der Velden, with whom he played at Willem II in the Netherlands last season.
The player, who represented Holland at under-21 level and also counts Vitesse Arnhem among his former clubs, revealed the central role played by Tangerines midfielder Van der Velden in persuading him to try out the Scottish Championship.
Now the pair will team up again in Ray McKinnon’s United side.
Speaking via translation, Van der Struijk said: “He (Van der Velden) was very positive about the club.
“I said I would naturally like to hear what they had to say.
“A few days ago, the deal became concrete.
“I had not expected this to happen but I am very grateful to Nick.”
Van der Struijk added that he might consider extending his stay at Tannadice longer than the agreed year if it suits both parties.
“If it pleases everyone, it (the contract) can always be extended,” he said.
“We need to look at both sides of this.
“It will all be new to me in Scotland.
“Scotland is not the hottest country but it is comparable with the Netherlands.
“I think Dundee United is a bit like William II (because) at the club everyone has a warm heart.”
