Dundee United have failed in an attempt to bring Gary Mackay-Steven back to the club, Courier Sport can reveal.
The Tangerines approached the Premiership leaders with regards to a loan deal through to January, and it is understood Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers was open to the idea.
However Mackay-Steven, who left Tannadice along with Stuart Armstrong in January 2015, has decided he wants to stay at Celtic Park and try to force his way into Rodgers’ plans.
He will have his work cut out though, as Celtic have got off to a flying start without him, and widemen Scott Sinclair and James Forrest have been star performers.
Mackay-Steven had to undergo a foot operation in the summer and hasn’t kicked a ball in a competitive game yet this season.
The 25-year-old was linked with a loan move to Ross County.
