Dundee United’s Blair Spittal insists ugly win has them sitting pretty for Hibs clash

Blair Spittal admitted Dundee United won ugly against Morton but insisted the result has them sitting pretty for Easter Road.

The Tangerines beat the Greenock club 2-1 at Tannadice on Saturday in a game that wasn’t exactly a classic.

The first half, in particular, was as dull as dishwater but the final scoreline was all that really mattered after losing to Falkirk in the league and Morton in the Betfred Cup.

Now Ray McKinnon’s men can head to Leith for their Sunday high noon showdown with Hibs with a spring in their step, according to Spittal.

He said: “The way the last few games have gone for us we needed this win.

“The manager put across to us that sometimes you can’t play pretty football in this league – you have to grind victories out.

“So the result was more important than how we played.

”The performance wasn’t the best but we managed to get two goals and we created enough opportunities in the second half to win the game.

“I think it was important to get the victory for the sake of our confidence.

“It is going to be a tough game next weekend against Hibs but we will be looking forward to it.

“Every team in this division can beat each other, as Ayr proved by going to Easter Road and winning, so we couldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves too early by saying the Hibs match was the most important.

“However, it is what faces us now so the focus is all on that.

“We are going into it full of confidence and if we can go and take the three points that would put us within touching distance of Hibs.”
