Dundee United have identified Jack Ross as their prime candidate to replace Tam Courts.
Courts, 40, departed Tannadice ‘by mutual consent’ on Tuesday afternoon amid ongoing talks with Rijeka.
That potential switch to Croatia is by no means assured, nevertheless the highly-rated coach is also considering opportunities south of the border.
In confirming Courts’ exit, United sporting director Tony Asghar stated that the Tangerines have already ‘identified a preferred candidate and anticipate making a further announcement in the coming days’.
Courier Sport understands that man to be Ross, with positive talks already in progress with the former Hibernian manager.
Ross, 46, has been out of work since being dismissed by the Easter Road club in December.
During his two-year reign in the capital, Ross finished third in the Premiership in 2020/21 and was a losing finalist in the Scottish Cup and Premier Sports Cup.
He has also enjoyed stints with Alloa, St Mirren – winning promotion from the Championship – and Sunderland prior to his time at Hibs.
With experience in the upper echelons of the Premiership, and of European football, Dundee United chiefs believe he is the ideal candidate to build on last season’s fourth-placed finish.
