Dundee United midfielder Willo Flood has called on the club to make “one or two” signings during the January transfer window.
The Tangerines were knocked off the top of the Championship table on Saturday thanks to a combination of their 1-0 defeat at Dumbarton and Hibs’ 2-1 victory at Falkirk.
Next up they meet the new league leaders at Easter Road on Friday night, with their title rivals having already enjoyed the luxury of adding Celtic’s Kris Commons on loan and former Motherwell winger Chris Humphrey.
As they chased an equaliser against the Sons, to boost their own attack United had to resort to pushing central defender Mark Durnan up front.
Boss Ray McKinnon does expect to get at least one striker on board this month and has been interested in Hearts frontman Conor Sammon and Celtic’s ex-Tannadice attacker Nadir Ciftci.
Flood is certainly hoping that chairman Stephen Thompson and his directors find the funds to allow McKinnon to boost the squad for the promotion push.
The experienced Irishman said: “Let’s hope the manager can get one or two players in to give us a little lift.
“I do think we need one or two to give us that bit extra, especially up top.
“There is only one recognised striker at the club and Simon Murray can’t do it all himself.
“So we need someone to give him a dig out at times.
“Let’s hope we can do that.
“To be fair to Vinny (Durnan) he was a handful when he went up front but he has been playing really well at centre back so we need him there.
“We could do with a physical presence up front, someone who gets hold of the ball for us.
“The manager knows exactly what he is looking for so let’s hope he can get the right one.”
