Dundee United played out a 3-2 defeat against Falkirk in a low-key bounce match at St Andrews on Saturday.

Jack Ross fielded a relatively senior starting line-up for United’s first taste of pre-season action.

Ian Harkes and Ilmari Niskanen — who had extra time off during the summer — did not feature.

The Tangerines side which concluded the contest had a far more youthful look amid the usual swathe of substitutions.

And it was two of their talented teenagers, Mathew Cudjoe and Rory MacLeod, who rippled the net against John McGlynn’s Bairns.

Rory MacLeod, 16, became United’s youngest ever senior player last season

Falkirk were playing their third pre-season game — having faced Kilmarnock and Stranraer already — while this was United’s first taste of action; largely utilised as a fitness exercise.

The Tangerines will play another friendly during their upcoming five-day training camp in Spain.

Clashes against Sunderland (July 16) and Fleetwood Town (July 23) will be more meaningful ahead of the start of their Premiership and Europa Conference League campaigns.
