Jack Ross admits Aziz Behich is ‘really frustrated’ after red tape robbed him of the opportunity to line up against AZ Alkmaar.
With Scott McMann injured, the Australia international would have — in all likelihood — started at left-back against the Eredivisie outfit.
However, his work permit was not approved in time, meaning natural right-back Kieran Freeman was forced to do a job on the other flank.
Ross has confirmed that Behich is registered for this round of the Europa Conference League, meaning he will be able to play in the second leg, providing there are no more complications with the paperwork.
Indeed, Ross is holding out hope that he could be available to face Livingston on Sunday.
“Aziz is registered for this round, but his work permit needs to be approved,” said Ross. “We hoped he would have been ready for Thursday — and so did he.
“He is really frustrated. He is a big game player and he would have thrived on a game like that.
“What I would say is, for Kieran Freeman, that is not easy playing on his wrong side. I thought he stuck to his task brilliantly.”
Ross added: “Hopefully Aziz will be available for Sunday. It is something we have been pushing hard on. We had a delay that we didn’t anticipate.”
Demon
One defender who did play against AZ — and played exceptionally well — was former Scotland and Celtic star Charlie Mulgrew.
The vastly experienced stopper made a host of key interceptions, blocks and coolly stepped out from the back in order to start attacks on countless occasions.
“Charlie is a top player,” lauded Ross.
“I was helping him with his [coaching] licences over the last few months. I know he has an interest in being a coach or a manager, and the tactical side of the game. It is great because he takes in information.
“Charlie trains like a demon every day and has really high levels, which he brings to the group.
“He has enjoyed big nights in his career, but he wanted another one on Thursday — and he played a big part in it.
Discussing the outstanding Dylan Levitt, who outshone Jordy Clasie in the heart of midfield, but appeared to be playing through the pain barrier at times following a painful impact, Ross added: “It was just a knock. We will see him and make sure he is okay.”
