Adam Asghar will depart Dundee United by mutual consent, the club have announced.

The 28-year-old — the son of United sporting director Tony Asghar — has been part of the senior Tannadice coaching staff since Tam Courts’ added him to the backroom team in the summer of 2021.

He remained in that position during the brief reign of Jack Ross, which came to an abrupt end on Tuesday morning.

Asghar will be in the United dugout for the final time when they visit Motherwell on Saturday afternoon.

Asghar ion the training pitch

The former Scottish FA Performance School coach initially joined the Terrors in March 2019, headhunted by Andy Goldie to become Head of Professional Performance.

That decision raised a few eyebrows, given Tony Asghar’s power at United.

Those criticisms only became more vocal when Asghar Jr made the step to up the senior set-up.

Nevertheless, he and Liam Fox — currently serving as United’s interim head coach — were key cogs on the training ground as Courts’ side secured a fourth-place finish in the Premiership last term.

In an exclusive interview with Courier Sport in June, Asghar opened up on the challenges of social media flak — and emphasised that he would never pursue a managerial role at Tannadice while his father was calling the shots.

Nevertheless, he was still named on some bookies’ lists of potential successors to Ross this week.

And Asghar has made the decision that the time is right to leave United and consider opportunities elsewhere.
