Kevin Thomson will be interviewed for the vacant head coach position at Dundee United, Courier Sport can reveal.
The former Scotland, Rangers and Dundee midfielder will be one of four candidates assessed for the position in the early part of next week.
An official appointment will follow in the subsequent days.
Thomson, 37, is currently without a club after leaving Kelty Hearts during the close season.
The ex-Rangers youth coach led the Fife club to the League Two title in his maiden campaign in senior management and was interviewed by Kilmarnock following the departure of Tommy Wright
He has since been linked with managerial vacancies at Dundee, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers.
Interim head coach Liam Fox — favourite to succeed Jack Ross on a permanent basis — will also be considered.
The 38-year-old was a pivotal part of Tam Courts’ staff last season as United finished fourth in the Premiership, and is well-liked and respected within the dressing room.
Fox has guided the Tangerines to a fine victory at Livingston and a gutsy 0-0 draw against Motherwell in his two matches at the helm.
It is understood that Saturday’s result against Rangers at Ibrox will have NO bearing on Fox’s hopes of landing the top job at Tannadice.
Speaking on Thursday, Fox stated: “All I can say is I’ve enjoyed the last three weeks but it’s not up to me whether I’m given the opportunity or not.
“That’s up to the people above me in the football club. They’ll make a decision based on what direction they see the club going.
“It’s been a challenging period but I’ve enjoyed it.”
Head coach model
The appointment is likely to see United return to the model of a highly-rated coach taking the reins — akin to Courts’ ascension last summer — following the ill-fated 10-week tenure of Ross.
That pathway was agreed in the immediate aftermath of Ross’ departure following talks involving between Mark Ogren and the club’s executive board.
And recent days have been spent whittling down a long-list of candidates — into double-figures — ahead of the final stage next week.
United are looking for their fifth permanent manager since the summer of 2020 following the departures of Robbie Neilson, Micky Mellon, Courts and Ross.
