Dundee United’s search for a new coach is set to be put “on the back-burner” until the World Cup hiatus, boss Liam Fox has revealed.
Former United star Dave Bowman is currently serving on the backroom staff alongside Fox and his No.2 Stevie Crawford.
However, that is understood to be a temporary measure, with Tangerines sporting director Tony Asghar stating on September 23: “The club will be adding a further assistant head coach soon to complete Liam’s coaching staff.”
But that process is now set to stretch well into November, at least.
“We put that (coach appointment) on the back burner for the last wee while because we have been so busy and had such a hectic schedule,” explained Fox.
“It’s something we still plan to do – but it has to be the right person.
“It has to be the right fit for me and the football club.
“It’s ongoing. We will get to the November break and sit down to talk about what direction we want to go in.”
A clear identity
Meanwhile, Fox is adamant United are improving “on a daily basis” despite a week to forget.
After a heartening run of seven points from a possible nine in the Premiership, the Terrors were brought crashing down to earth with successive 2-1 defeats against Kilmarnock and St Mirren.
United are now three points adrift of guaranteed safety ahead of Saturday’s league showdown against Motherwell.
However, Fox is keen to retain a sense of perspective.
“It was always going to be a process to get us back to where we want to be,” added Fox. “I try to stay level – not get too high and not get too low. You need to assess things properly.
“Obviously, when you go into a week looking for two wins and you don’t get them you’re disappointed.
“But I can see improvement on a daily basis. We need to keep building on it and develop a clear identity of who we are and how we want to play.”
